Often times, patients in our office ask why we adjust newborns, toddlers, children, and teens. They don't have back pain or problems, right?! The answer to that is that they too experience stress in their spine and nervous system. They may not be able to communicate that stress the way an adult would, but it is usually expressed. We just have to know what to look for. Problems like colic, sleep difficulties, allergies, constipation, delayed development, headaches, attention deficit or hyperactivity, bed wetting, scoliosis, etc are all signs that the spine and nervous system are under stress.
How do newborns, toddlers, and kids in general develop stress in their spine or what we call subluxations? Subluxations occur with any major or even minor spinal trauma. (a fall, a jolt, a sudden movement) can cause the vertebra to become misaligned. This can happen in children due to mal-positioning in utero (breech, transverse positioning), birth trauma or difficulty (use of vacuum extraction, forceps, cesarean section) as well as with falls and tumbles.
There is a small window of time when your child's spine is developing from birth to age 15 in which to prevent adult problems and keep your child as healthy as possible. But of course, it's never too late to improve your health. Dr. Carri Cook will evaluate your child to determine what type of adjustments and the frequency of care they should receive. Any nutritional or lifestyle recommendations will also be addressed. Most often the families who choose chiropractic care as a way to keep themselves healthy and well are seen on a monthly basis.
Insurance companies do not recognize the importance of regular chiropractic care for children. Dr. Carri believes that chiropractic care is crucial for a developing child and is willing to work with your family financially to ensure your child gets the care he/she needs!
